How to FIND recruiters.

You would think that considering how important it is for recruiters to stay visible to potential candidates, finding recruiters that have the role you are interested won’t be hard – and you would be right!

Here we are going to talk about a few ways to find out who is supposedly a gatekeeper to that awesome world of permanently (or temporarily) employed people.

  1. Why complicate things?

You got your CV, you applied for the role, you waited patiently, and all you want now is to talk to a human being to find out what the heck is going on.

Good on ya mate. Then call reception.

Sometimes we tend to overcomplicate things when the answer to your troubles is very much on the surface. Explain to reception why you are calling, and who knows you might be lucky. If we are talking about a smaller recruitment agency (boutique you know) there might be no reception in fact and your recruiter will pick up the phone.

However, do a few things BEFORE you call.

Think of something smart to say. ‘I applied to the role you have posted and haven’t heard back’ – won’t be too impressive.

It might be a good idea, to bring up skills that make you a good fit for the role:

– I see from the job description that you are looking for a social media and digital marketing person. I spent the last few years doing … and … (main expertise areas) and my latest campaign on … (cool platform) brought … customers/revolutionised the conversion rate etc etc


Ask a question that would bridge the answer into your sales pitch.

– So, I read your role description and had a look at the website, do I understand correctly that you are moving towards enterprise-level clients?

– Yes, yes blah blah

– That’s awesome. My last 8 projects were solely in the enterprise space and I worked in a company that developed from S&M into big business within 4 years, etc etc etc

Record yourself and listen to how you sound. Ask a friend to record you on the phone. Listen. Compare to the way native speakers sound.

Take time to overcome phone anxiety. Call strangers. Call Telstra, Vodafone and AAMI. Talk to your bank. Talk to insurance companies. Anywhere were customer support will pick up and will try to sell you something – call them. Talk to phone marketers and scammers – it’s all good (just don’t give them your credit card details). If you speak to strangers every day within the next 2-3 weeks, you will get used to different accents, including Australian ‘bubbly’ females and will certainly feel more confident about your phone skills.

  1. Seek 101.

It might be a good idea to get to know recruiters who work in your sector – in general. Hence, it might be an even better idea to look for them on seek.

Choose a reputable agency and off you go.

In the role description, you will find contact information of recruiters who are working in Hays and are specialising on Banking and Finance.

For example:

What to do if neither of them is working on roles that are of interest to you? Never mind. Add recruiters on LinkedIn and tap on the shoulder once there’s something interesting comes up.

If you don’t fancy big agencies – add ‘recruitment’ OR ‘resources’ into keyword section (the one Seek elegantly calls WHAT) 😊 Smaller agencies love adding ‘recruitment’ or ‘resources’ to their title, so you will be able to find more recruiter names.

  1. LinkedIn – Companies

Let’s say you fancy the company called FactSet, and a Grad position that they posted. How do you find recruiters that are looking after it?

We go to LinkedIn and search for them:

You come to the company page on LinkedIn and filter through their employees using filters like location, company and potentially position title.

Currently, it’s becoming a bit difficult to identify people in the recruitment function as they can use different keywords calling themselves ‘recruiter’, ‘recruiting’, ‘staffing’, ‘talent acquisition’, ‘people and performance’, ‘people and culture’, etc.

So, you either need to look through the list of 69 profiles to identify someone you might need to speak to OR try different keywords in filters.

On the 4th page, I come across FactSet HR Business partner, which is not ideal, but much better than nothing.

  1. X-Ray tools.

If I want to find out who is the recruiter for a role in a big corporate.

Surely, some of these lovely people will point you towards the right person, and wouldn’t be referring your cover letter to Ms Catherine Johnson sound so much better than infamous ‘Dear Sirs/Madams’?

Overall, any job search might start with whether ‘here’s the role, I wonder, who is the person that is looking after it? OR ‘here’s the recruiter who’s specialising in my industry, do they have any roles for me, I wonder’?
